Coteaux du Giennois 2014 Domaine de Villargeau
The Côteaux du Giennois is just north of the Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé vineyard areas, down-river along the Loire. Here the soil is very similar, the main grape (Sauvignon Blanc) is the same and the winemaking is the same. So a good Giennois gives many Sancerres and Pouilly-Fumés a good run for their money.
Domaine de Villargeau was founded by brothers Fernand and Jean-Francois Thibault in 1991. They planted vines on South-West facing hillsides that had been abandoned since the phylloxera crisis in the 19th century. The soil has quite a lot of flint which gives the wine a hint of the same gunflint character that is often found in Pouilly-Fumé.
