PORT

Niepoort

Niepoort, headed by the amazingly energetic Dirk Niepoort is our major Port supplier. The family firm, now 4 th generation, gained its reputation from its range of old Tawny Ports and, in particular its dated Tawnies known as Colheitas, where, unlike a 10 or 20 year old, the wine is all from the same year. Instead of the wine maturing in bottle like a Vintage Port, it has been matured in barrel and bottled when ready to drink. Nowadays Dirk is equally famous for his Vintage Ports – Niepoort Vintage, Secundum and Quinta do Passadouro – as well as his Douro table wines – Redoma & Batuta. Petre’s is Niepoort’s second label for Vintage Port. The wines are earlier maturing and represent excellent value.

Niepoort 10 year old Tawny

bottle

£22.50

“Dirk Niepoort is the master of fine old tawnies. His family which has owned this small port house for generations, has always made the best 10-year-old tawny. This offers amazing aromas of orange and lemon peel, with hints of toffee, caramel and honey. Medium-to-full-bodied and luscious, with lots of sweet fruit and a long, subtle finish that goes on and on. This really is the benchmark for 10-year-old tawnies.” 95/100 Wine Spectator

“This is what 20 year old is all about. Subtle aromas of toffee, caramel and flan, with hints of dried fruits. Medium-to-full-bodied with sweet fruit and a long coffee aftertaste that turns to honey and apricots. Very fine indeed. This is superb!” 94/100 Wine Spectator

“Rich and complex on both nose and palate. Nutty and long. Excellent.” Patrick Grubb “Outstanding colour and bouquet of spice, dark cherries. A bit aged but still very fresh orange peel character. Sublime, long palate, smooth and elegant with fresh nuts. Good balance and depth with a great finish.” Jane Parkinson. 94/100 Wine International

Quinta do Vale Meão

Owner Vito Olazabal retained the Vale Meão vineyards and winery when Ferreira, his family’s port house, sold up in 1997. It is here that the famous Barca Velha red table wine used to be made and Vito is carrying on the tradition with his excellent Douro reds (see Portuguese wines page) and these Ports. Both vintages are gutsy and flavoursome. They would benefit from cellaring for 10+ years.
