RHÔNE
The Rhône Valley has had a good run of vintages recently – 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 & 2003. Be sure to look at our separate 2003 Rhône Offer. Even 2002, when it rained catastrophically in South, has given some very enjoyable, forward, early-drinking reds where growers were prepared to be very selective. At Château de Saint Cosme Louis Barruol put most of his Gigondas grapes into his Côtes du Rhône and didn’t make any of his usual special cuvées. As a result the 2002 Gigondas makes very enjoyable drinking now. Ditto Roger Sabon’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape and, in the north where it didn’t rain nearly as much, Vincent Paris has made excellent St-Joseph & Cornas.

One of the stars of the vintage with a deep rich colour and wonderful scents of dark fruits, smoke, minerals and flowers. Deep textured, full bodied and rich this superb wine should be at its peak in 2-3 years and drink well for 10+ years. [91-94/100 Robert Parker] |

A blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah, Valbelle is a blend of the oldest vines in Saint Cosme. The Grenache reveals the terroir at its best and puts its mark upon a remarkable wine that represents the essence of the appellation. With great texture and concentration, it has a purity and long finish that will make it one of the great wines of the vintage. Keep 3-4 years or more and drink over the following 10+. Special Cuvée only for “Faithful Men” who supported Louis by buying his 2002 vintage. He picked the oldest vineyards of Saint Cosme (already producing in 1902) and fermented the grapes separately to give a Grenache that is powerful and unique. Best kept at least 5 years and drunk over the following 10 years. [93-95/100 Robert Parker] |

“Great definition in its big, flowery, cassis, plum, and licorice-scented nose, medium to full body, sweet fruit, a terrific texture, and a long, heady finish. It is one of the finest regular cuvees St.-Cosme has made. Drink now-2014.” 91/100 Robert Parker |

“…gorgeous, structured, impressive. Full-bodied and backward, with great depth, purity, and heady aromatics, this…will easily rival the 1998. A deep ruby/purple-tinged color is accompanied by a sweet perfume of salty sea breezes, seaweed, melted licorice, kirsch liqueur, creme de cassis, and iodine. A classic Vieux-Télégraphe aromatic display. Powerful as well as firmly structured, this is a wine to lay away…” 93/100 Robert Parker. Drink 2006-2020 |

|
1985 |
Côte-Rôtie, Bernard Burgaud |
bottle |
£75.00 |
|
“By comparison with the elegantly wrought wines Burgaud produced in previous vintages, the 1985 is a corpulent, dense, powerful wine that is fully mature. Dark ruby-colored with moderate amber at the edge, this wine has a spicy, cassis, herb, and licorice-scented nose, good acidity, and excellent depth and length.” 92/100 Robert Parker |

Hermitage Monier de la Sizeranne, Chapoutier [B] |
bottle |
£32.50 |

“Saturated dense purple color, a classic, smoky, cassis-scented nose, and fresh acidity nicely meshed with the wine's rich, concentrated black fruit character” 90/100 Robert Parker. This is drinking very well now. |
|
|
1989 |
Hermitage Monier de la Sizeranne, Chapoutier [O] |
bottle |
£75.00 |
|
“The 1989 La Sizeranne was aged in 40% new oak casks and was produced from yields that did not exceed 30 hectoliters per hectare. It is an organically made, unfined, unfiltered wine that is drinking surprisingly well. The dark ruby/purple color exhibits no signs of age. The bouquet leaps from the glass, offering up aromas of cassis, minerals, smoky oak, and herbs. In the mouth, this rich, powerful, concentrated, superripe wine offers succulence and delineation. The tannins are noticeable, but ripe and unobtrusive. Anticipated maturity: now-2010.” 90/100 Robert Parker |
|
|
1995 |
Hermitage La Chapelle, Paul Jaboulet Aîné |
bottle |
£49.00 |
|
“A saturated purple/plum color is accompanied by gamy, blackberry, and smoked meat aromas. While this wine is rich and full-bodied, the question mark reflects its gritty, astringent tannin and austere personality. It is a large-scaled, boldly-flavored, but ferociously tannic La Chapelle. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2035.” 90/100 Robert Parker. |
|
|
1988 |
Hermitage La Chapelle, Paul Jaboulet Aîné |
bottle |
£75.00 |
|
“Opaque purple/garnet with a touch of amber at the edge, this sexy, rich effort … possesses multiple dimensions as well as abundant aromas of cedar, damp forest, spice box, and Asian spices. The wine is dense, with a firm, noticeably tannic edge, full body, and concentrated, powerful flavors. It is a classy, understated La Chapelle. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2025.” 92/100 Robert Parker |
